"The program opened with Danielle Diniz’s vibrant and enticing Revolutions, with music composition from Anthony Hervey. Quick steps aligned with jazzy drum beats. The movement was quite balletic in form, yet also oozed with sass and panache: rolling hips, sure footwork, sly smiles accompanying quick turns. The work thus felt akin with Balanchine works that also explored this territory.
Just as Balanchine also did, Diniz constructed spacing and structure to work well with this being a trio (danced by Kailee Felix, Kirsten MacIntosh and Katie Vigly). Overall, after only a few minutes, it had me feeling viscerally reminded of how magical concert dance can be — when the alchemy of music, movement and design gel just so. The work also epitomized short and sweet, a little nugget that offered a whole feast of vibrancy and kinetic energy." -DanceInforma
"Danielle Diniz’s jazzy romp Night Cycles opened the program. It opened with an explosion of speed and expansiveness, the five dancers meeting the pizzazz of the live jazz score (composed by Luther S. Allison). Movement was classically grounded, but also sprinkled with jazzy ingredients: pencil turns, parallel shapes, cha-cha steps. Simple costumes of white tops and dark navy bottoms effectively complemented the understated classiness of all that.
Also aligning with that feel was the ensemble’s calm contentment – simply breathing through and savoring each moving moment. I felt the same just experiencing it from them. Audrey Lukacz added a little more fire and intrigue to her solo, peppering emotional variance into this non-narrative work. "The penultimate dance on the program... was an excerpt from a dance choreographed by Danielle Diniz, to be titled Young, Wild & Free. Diniz is a highly-respected dancer and relatively “new” choreographer who first made a name for herself in the New York area, but has been commissioned to create for companies and schools far beyond New York. She has a background in ballet as well as jazz, contemporary, show, and almost anything else under the sun, and she teaches at a variety of New York dance schools. I understand that she’s in high demand, and having her choreograph a piece for AVID is sends a distinct message – that AVID is for real."-CriticalDance
